Norbert Majerus: Innovation in Uncertain Times
Shingo Award Winning Author

In 2016, Norbert published his first book, Lean-Driven Innovation, which received the Shingo Research Award. Also in 2016, with Norbert’s guidance the Goodyear R&D organization applied for and received the AME Excellence Award.
Managing the risk has always been a big challenge with innovation. And now that risk is greater than ever because the environment we live in has added another level of uncertainty. But lean innovation is addressing many more principles to let innovation thrive in any environment.
The problem with innovation is that you know very little about the new product or service that you are developing and you have to first develop at least a piece to find out. And the faster you get that done and the less you have to invest in that effort the more successful you will be.
Lean innovation thinking takes cues from lean start-up, agile development, innovation risk management and other revolutionary methods to manage the fuzzy front end of the innovation process. It follows up with knowledge based principles for the technology development and flow based factory like systems for the development of the product itself.
The basic principles and the process of lean innovation are illustrated and validated by many examples.

Michael Bremer: Be the Leader You Want to Be
Shingo Award Winning Author
Michael Bremer is a Shingo Award winning author, recipient of the Mac McCulloch Life Time Achievement Award from AME and retired President of the Cumberland Group. In his retirement he leads the excellence award activities for the Association of Manufacturing Excellence and has done improvement effectiveness site visit assessments at a variety of companies including Toyota owned facilities. While doing some field research several leaders at organizations with highly effective improvement practices said, “The more I practice lean and agile thinking, the more it transforms my leadership style. I’m not the same leader today, that I was three years ago.” This caused Michael to shift the focus of his research to see if there was some pattern or behavior that was common to the transformation these people made in the way they lead. In observing their behaviors, listening to their responses and listening to the people with whom they work, four key patterns emerged as a common theme.
Robert D. Miller: Hearing the Voice of the Shingo Principles
Author, “Hearing the Voice of the Shingo Principles….Creating Sustainable Cultures of Enterprise Excellence.”
This presentation and discussion will focus on how leaders can learn to Hear the Voice of the Shingo Principles. In the presentation, Bob will discuss personal values and how values influence the behavioral choices that we each make continuously throughout the work day. He will help each of us to connect our personal values with the principles of Operational Excellence and show us how to begin the leadership journey of becoming effective leaders of a sustainable culture of excellence.
During the discussion, Bob will give us each an opportunity to personally confront one aspect of our behavior in response to a typical business situation and evaluate the impact that behavior has on the behaviors of others on our teams. We will discuss the likely results that a continuation of those behaviors is likely to have.
Together we will discuss the degree to which our current leadership behaviors are in harmony with correct principles. Using one of the examples, we will discuss which principle has the greatest impact on what we are experiencing (either following or not following), then brainstorm together a set of ideal behaviors that flow from thinking about the problem through the lens of the principle. During this hour, Bob will try to give us an experience that will illustrate why building a culture of excellence is not something that can be simply delegated to others.

Philip Holt: BTFA, The Human Factor of a Lean Transformation
Philip Holt, SVP, Operational Excellence, GKN Aerospace
Philip is currently Senior Vice President, Operational Excellence at GKN Aerospace and was formerly Vice President, Continuous Improvement at Travelport, a leading Travel Commerce Platform, and prior to that held a number of senior Lean Leadership roles with Royal Philips, most notably Head of Continuous Improvement and Head of Operational Excellence, Accounting Operations. Philip was the lead author of the Philips Lean Excellence Model.
The Deming-Shewhart (PDSA) cycle, often known as PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act), is a well-established, logical model of change and problem solving, and adopted in many organisations. However, it’s apparent that the vast majority of activities spend insufficient time on the Plan, Check and Act, elements and are often focussed on the Do, finding the illusion of activity preferable to the reality of performance.
Many analyses of the failure of Lean transformations, and the prescribed remedies of consultants and Operational Excellence leaders, centre around the training and coaching of people to better understand and apply PDCA correctly, building problem solving skill and competence, which normally works well in the short-term, whilst the spotlight of management attention is at full brightness.
Nevertheless, this fails to tackle the root cause of the malady of the organisation, which are the fundamental beliefs of the organisation’s people in the new ways of working which, left untreated, swiftly causes a return to the old ways of working once the spotlight dullens and the daily business pressures are experienced.
David Bovis’ BTFA (Believe-Think-Feel-Act) model describes the emotional and psychological cycle of change, which interacts with the logical PDCA cycle on a continuous basis and impacts the success of the transformation almost invisible to the untrained eye.
During this webinar, Philip Holt will describe how he has led Enterprise level Lean Transformation across both Philips and currently GKN Aerospace, over close to 15 years, and how the critical success factor of addressing the impact of the BTFA cycle was a major contributor to success.
